Step back in time and embark on a nostalgic journey aboard the Vouga Historical Train, operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP). Running between Aveiro and Macinhata do Vouga, this unique one-day experience allows you to travel along the only operational narrow-gauge line in Portugal. Immerse yourself in the rich heritage of the early 20th century as you board one of the five carriages, carefully restored to their former glory, and take the opportunity to see the pictureseque surrounding as the CP 9004 historic diesel locomotive or the centenary CP E214 steam locomotive take you on a discovery of the cultural and historical treasures nestled along the Vouga Line.

Upon arriving in Macinhata do Vouga, take the time to visit the town’s Railway Museum, where you can delve into the fascinating history of the region’s railway heritage. Marvel at the carefully preserved artifacts and learn about the railway’s role in shaping the local communities. Alternatively, stop and soak up the lively atmosphere created by a local group singing traditional songs. Become lost in the vibrant sounds and let the region’s rhythm sweep you away. You will also have the opportunity to browse and sample regional products, for further immersion in the local culture.

As you embark on your return journey, the Vouga Historical Train will treat you to a unique cultural experience - a stop in the charming old town centre of Águeda. Join a guided tour to explore the city’s historical heart, meander through its river, and discover the traditional shopping areas. Taste some of the delightful local cuisine, savoring regional delicacies and the famous traditional sweets of Águeda. If your visit coincides with the “AgitÁgueda” festival or the mesmerising “Umbrella Sky” project, a symbol of the city’s artistic spirit, you’ll be treated to an extraordinary visual spectacle for an even more enchanting experience.

Aveiro is conveniently located by the Portuguese coast, offering easy access from the north, centre, and south of the country. Please check the Comboios de Portugal website at www.cp.pt for more details about the Vouga Historical Train. CP also provides discounts for trips onboard the Alfa Pendular, Intercidades, Regional/InterRegional, and urban trains from Porto, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable journey to the Vouga Historical Train.
