Mr Adama Diagne, Honorary Secretary General of the Union of African Railways (UAR) and former World Advisor at UIC, has passed away

It is with great sadness that UIC learned of the death earlier this week of Mr Adama Diagne, Honorary Secretary General of the Union of African Railways (UAR) and former World Advisor at UIC.

Adama Diagne, born in 1932 in Saint-Louis, Senegal, was most notably the signatory to the Constitution of the Union of African Railways (UAR), of which he was the first Secretary General in 1974, and then re-elected in 1979.

In 1984 he left this position to become Advisor for world issues (and relations with associated networks) at the UIC headquarters in Paris.

Following his appointment as Honorary Secretary General of the UAR, he was also closely linked to the development of activities in the UIC African Region, for which he was coordinator.

He made a lasting commitment to UIC, the UAR, and a number of other international bodies in order to help rail transport contribute more effectively to Africa’s economic integration.

UIC has lost a friend and a tireless advocate for the railways on an international level. The members of UIC management wish to extend their deepest condolences to the family of Mr Adama Diagne and to all their colleagues in Senegal and the African Region to whom he was so committed.
