Ballastless Track

FINALISED PROJECT

Objective:

Ballastless track was one of the technical options opened to achieve the following objectives of the Rail Plan and of the EU. The project was created in 2003 and ended in 2005. This project resulted in a thorough feasibility study.

  • Increase capacity
  • Increase speed
  • Reduce maintenance and life cycle costs
  • Reduce the number of track maintenance operations and thereby increase safety.
  • Provide owners and contractors with objective tools independent of industry and based on the railways’ experience.

Feasibility Study:

The feasibility study yielded a more thorough and more objective review of the state of the art than the information available in known publications. It is a guide to the various aspects to be considered when choosing ballastless track and a summary catalogue of the different projects implemented.

The second phase of the project consisted of drawing up technical specifications to enable the railways to define specifications for ballastless track projects.

This project is now finished and three documents have been published:

  • Ballastless track. Application and experience with ballastless track
  • Recommendations for design & Calculation of ballastless track
  • Vertical elasticity of ballastless track
