The 2nd Philippine Railway Modernisation and Expansion Summit was held from 16 – 17 October 2019 in Manila, the Philippines, and, like in 2018, UIC was closely involved in this event focusing on the renewal of the railway sector (on both main and urban lines).

Mr Milko Papazoff, UIC ASEAN Representative, chaired the two-day summit for the second time in a row, and Mr Francis Bédel, UIC Chief Digital Officer, was been invited to present the UIC Digital Platform and then the Digitalisation Programme of UIC, that is rapidly developing across Europe and soon in Asia.

This event was the occasion to make a detailed review on what is happening and going on in the Philippines, in terms of main line railway projects and urban line projects (rehabilitation, line extension, new lines). We may mention in particular the approval for a new line linking Manila to the Clark Airport and the Clark Economic Zone, as well as the first Metro Manila subway project (now under construction) that is going to complete furthermore the existing urban rail network of the Philippine capital city.

The Department of Transport of the Government of the Philippines, especially with the support of PNR (Philippine National Railway), a new UIC member since late 2018, has also embarked on a major rehabilitation plan as well as for railway network extensions across the major islands of Luzon, Mindanao and Cebu.
UIC is going to play an active role in supporting these projects and will be again partnering upcoming railway events in the Philippines in 2020.

It is also worth noting the active participation and contribution of UIC in the ASEAN Region in the past months, such as the ASEAN Rail Infrastructure & Expansion 2019 in Hanoi, Vietnam, the 5th Thai Rail Industry Symposium and Exhibition in Bangkok, Thailand and the 21st Special Working Group Meeting on the Singapore-Kunming Rail Link (SKRL) in Vientiane, Lao PDR, with various presentations related to the ASEAN rail market and the role of UIC in ASEAN, the future mobility of ASEAN and the role of UIC in the railway standards and standardisation.
