The CBRNe4rail project, co-funded by the European Union and coordinated by the UIC Security Department, has actively engaged with railway stakeholders through a series of targeted communication actions this winter.
Paula Férnandez Díaz, UIC Junior Security Advisor, presented the project to counter terrorism experts during the UIC Special Group COLPOFER Terrorism Working Group meeting on 12 – 13 November.
Grigore Havârneanu, UIC Security Department Deputy Director and CBRNe4rail Project Coordinator, communicated about the project at several key events. During the UITP Security Committee meeting on 18 – 20 November, he showcased the project’s work plan and discussed potential synergies.
He was also an invited panelist at the eNOTICE-2 project’s Final Conference, which took place in Soave, Italy on 26 – 27 November. He highlighted the importance of involving all of society, including rail staff, in CBRNe training and exercising and explained how the CBRNe4rai project will achieve this goal.
Finally, he presented the project during the 20th UIC World Security Congress, co-organised by UIC and ONCF under the High Patronage of His Majesty Mohammed VI on 2 – 4 December in Rabat, Morrocco. He underlined the project’s contribution towards the UIC Security Platform’s strategic priorities and showcased its role in helping the sector prepare for CBRNe threats. Delegates also explored the project roll-up in the exhibition area for further insights.
Meanwhile, the project partners participated in the second study visit at Venezia Porto Marghera Station. Experts from the University of Lodz and the Italian NBC School began by interviewing FS station staff regarding evacuation procedures, security systems and relevant past incidents. They also reviewed key security documentation and led a structured discussion on possible CBRNe scenarios. This was followed by a comprehensive tour of the facility and its surrounding area.
Looking ahead, three more study visits are planned, leading to the development of a practical, evidence-based CBRNe security guidance for the rail sector.
