Stig Larsson, former CEO of Swedish Railways (SJ) has passed away

It is with great sadness that UIC was informed that Stig Larsson, former President and Director General of SJ, the Swedish State Railways passed away recently.

UIC wants to pay tribute to the strong and continuous commitment of Stig Larsson to UIC’s sustainable development activities in the nineties.

On behalf of the international railway community, UIC expresses its deepest condolences to Mr Larsson’s family and to Swedish Railways (SJ).

In February 1988 Stig Larsson was appointed President and Director General of SJ, the Swedish State Railways.

After studying at Chalmers’ Technical University in Gothenburg, he graduated with a Master of Science in Engineering. He was also Honorary Doctor at the same university.

In September 1993 he was also appointed Vice Chairman of UIC, the International Union of Railways and on 1 November 1996 as Chairman of UIC.

Mr Larsson was Chairman of the Board of AB Swedcarrier, SweFerry AB, Royal Viking Hotel AB, Rail Combi AB, Swedish Tourism Council and Stockholm Water Foundation.

He was member of the Board of the National Agency for Government Employers (SAV), the Transport Research Commission (TFK), the Taxpayers’ Association, the Stockholm Water Festival and the environmental organisation the Natural Step.

Stig Larsson was also a member of the Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) section XI for Education and Research.
