UIC publishes first edition of IRS 70705, “Infrastructure for tilting trains”

UIC develops and publishes IRSs to help railway stakeholders to achieve greater harmonisation and efficiency in daily railway operations.

As IRSs are gradually replacing UIC leaflets, the Track Experts Group (TEG) within the Rail System Department’s Infrastructure Sector has been collaborating in order to provide recommendations and clarifications with regard to the migration of Leaflet 705 to the new IRS 70705 published in May 2021.

The first edition of IRS 70705 includes a summary table with new information provided by the TEG members in late 2020 and pools knowledge regarding the track design parameters for operation of tilting trains on conventional lines.

Body tilting is a design technique for railway passenger vehicles. It enables the coach body to be tilted around a longitudinal axis, thus limiting the lateral acceleration of the vehicle body and its effect on perceived passenger comfort. Vehicles with tilting bodies can thus negotiate curves at higher speeds than conventional coaches without adversely affecting passenger comfort.

IRS 70705 is available from the UIC ETF Shop.

UIC is truly grateful for the consensus achieved in producing this IRS and the TEG’s valuable encouragement and commitment to contributing to sharing and harmonisation of good practices, helping to ensure that IRSs are as universal as possible.
