technology trends and their impact on the rail sector. Each workshop brings together expert insights, interactive sessions, and hands on joint creation activities, supported by digital collaboration tools to encourage active participation and knowledge sharing.
The next workshop is titled “From tickets to accounts: designing account-based journeys” will take place on 4 June 2026, from 9:00 to 15:30 at UIC in Paris. The event will be held in hybrid form, allowing participants to attend either in-person or online.
Account-based ticketing (ABT) is currently gaining momentum, as by moving fare logic to the back office, it enables media-agnostic travel, best-fare capping, faster product rollouts, lower operating costs, and a seamless passenger experience. In many contexts, it also reduces the need for pre-purchased tickets and passes. Available models include open-loop EMV, closed-loop, and app-based options, each with distinct operational, technology, and governance implications.
In this workshop, an overview of the different ABT models, their pros and cons, and their applicability to various contexts and customer segments will be presented. Best practices and lessons learned from real-world case histories will be shared, alongside present approaches to tackling ABT challenges in multi-operator and multi-modal settings and a decision framework to support strategic choices.
Together, the latest developments and the opportunities for the passenger rail industry will be explored.
Workshop takeaways:
- Understand ABT benefits, challenges, and best practices
- Understand the operational, technology, and governance implications of different ABT models
- Explore standards and digital tools to streamline multi-operator, multi-modal ABT
- Gain insights into how digital wallets can enable new opportunities to improve ABT
- Discover how federations can pave the way for interoperability across ABT systems
- Learn from real-world case studies and lessons from leading industry stakeholders
- Discuss opportunities and challenges with technology experts and industry peers
- Attend breakout sessions, conducted in a digital collaborative workspace
- Contribute with colleagues on how to make an impact on passenger rail
