The construction of a railway line linking Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania is set to commence in 2014 at an estimated cost of 4.7 billion USD. Discussions are currently taking place between the three governments to agree on a formal financing arrangement. This project will be funded by the three governments, aided by their respective donors and the private sector.

The aim of this railway project is to link the three countries’ economic centres (agricultural, mining and industrial) to the port of Dar es Salaam and to boost economic and social development across the region. In Burundi, for example, the railway line will pass through Musongati with a view to supporting nickel exports.
