The group on Metal Theft, chaired by SNCF, gathered comments from all the main railway companies concerned (notably with presentations by RFF, Deutsche Bahn, Infrabel, PKP-PLK, SNCF, etc.) to confirm the extent of the problem, its implications on an international level, and the need to construct national policy responses with police and justice authorities. This would be achieved by working in conjunction with those involved in the second-hand metal trade as well with those in other sectors affected by the problem, such as electricity and telecommunications.

A number of technological solutions were also presented:

A position paper/mandate of the working group will be drafted and discussed during the next meeting to be held on Tuesday 19 March 2013, and to which representatives of the electricity, telecommunications and customs sectors will be invited.

All relevant information is available in the Security section of the UIC Extranet, in the working group’s own restricted workspace.
