Switzerland: SBB offers free internet access in stations

SBB is expecting an increase in mobility in future and, as a consequence, a rise in passenger expectations when it comes to mobile communication on trains. Easy and reliable access to mobile services and fast connection to the internet have become important factors in increasing customer satisfaction during the journey.

In order to provide better Wi-Fi coverage on trains, SBB and telecommunications operators are currently installing repeaters on all mainline trains. Three-quarters of trains on mainline routes will be equipped by the end of 2013, with the remainder by the end of 2014. Mobile phone operators are continually expanding their 3G and now 4G/LTE service along rail lines to plug the gaps in network coverage in order to improve reception on trains.

Free Wi-Fi internet access now available in almost 100 stations

This week SBB decided it would install Wi-Fi technology at Switzerland’s busiest stations. Around 100 stations will offer access by the end of 2015 with the first 20 being upgraded this year. In doing this, SBB wants to deliver a simple and identical high speed internet access for all passengers. The Wi-Fi access will be available free of charge for a set period of time that has not yet been determined. “I am pleased to provide our customers with modern means of communication in our stations. This will optimise reception on our trains which we are constantly aiming to improve by working with telecommunication operators”, said Andreas Meyer, CEO of SBB.
