On 12 April the General Assembly of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) appointed Mr Umberto de Pretto as the New Secretary General of the road transport organisation. He succeeds Mr Martin Marmy, who has held this position at the head of IRU Headquarters in Geneva for the last 20 years and was named IRU Secretary General Emeritus. Mr de Pretto will take up his new function from 1 June 2013.

Mr Umberto de Pretto, born in 1961, a Canadian and Italian national, previously worked for the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris and the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa. He joined the IRU in 1995 and was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the worldwide road transport association in 2002.

UIC, on behalf of the international railway community, would like to congratulate Mr Martin Marmy for having led the IRU organisation for two decades, and expresses best wishes to Mr de Pretto in his new responsibilities. UIC is also keen to develop fruitful cooperation in the future between both organisations on issues of common interest.
