The market segment of international combined transport in TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) is still the main driver for growth with an increase of 6% from 2013 to 2015

The “2016 Report on Combined Transport in Europe” was prepared on behalf of the International Union of Railways (UIC) by BSL Transportation Consultants GmbH and provides a thorough insight into the combined transport industry in 2015. The 2016 Report provides readily usable information on the European combined rail/ road transport market, and is a Report unique of its kind, a comprehensive instrument necessary for understanding the sector in terms of market structure and volumes.
In addition to the market information featured in previous editions (i.e. market structure and general outlook) the 2016 edition of the Report includes some of the significant topics currently under discussion in the European railway environment, such as the harmonised implementation of the Rail Freight Corridors and its likely impact on the further development of the combined transport.

The Report also includes spotlight analyses on the development of:

  • the hinterland market and seaport activity;
  • market technology and digitalisation;
  • market development in the (Eastern) Mediterranean and Russia.

While rail modal split of freight transport is particularly high in Central-Eastern and North-Eastern Europe, the Report shows how the market segment of international combined transport in TEU is still the main driver for growth with an increase of 6% from 2013 to 2015.

Despite the fact that the total volume of combined transport in Europe in TEU recorded a slight increase compared to 2013, the total Combined Transport market increase is mainly driven by volumes of the unaccompanied segment (+ 8.5% from 2013 to 2015).

The stronger growth of tonnes compared to TEU indicates an increasing trend towards transporting heavier shipments.

Combined Transport, once again, shows its importance as leading market segment with 43% growth (in tonnes) since 2005.

The UIC Combined Transport Group (CTG) has the aim of developing cooperation at international and community level between all Railway Undertakings, with a view to advancing and promoting intermodal techniques and making them reliable, competitive and better-suited to the requirements of the market and the environment.
The CTG is open to all interested railways who operate international combined transport traffic.
