Like for earlier ERTMS World Conferences, UIC provided the participants with documentation related to ERTMS. At the Malaga 2009 edition, several new publications have been released.

In its 20th year there are no doubts about the key role of ERTMS for the revitalisation of the European railways. For this occasion, a book entitled “Compendium on ERTMS” has been edited by UIC under lead of Prof. Peter Winter ERTMS advisor UIC and published by the Eurail press/ DVV Media Group.

It gives a comprehensive initiation to the complex ERTMS issue for interested readers from the political, academic, normative, industrial and rail traffic related scene.

280 pages and numerous illustrations describe the main characteristics of the European projects Traffic Management Layer (ETML), Integrated European Signalling System (INESS), European Train Control System (ETCS) and the railway communication system GSM-R, which are widely recognised to be the four pillars of the ERTMS concept.

A general introduction and chapters on the European background for ERTMS, an overview on the ERTMS implementations in Europe and worldwide, considerations about the potential benefits with ERTMS and conclusions with outlook on the long term future will allow to better understand the ERTMS concept.

The Compendium has been distributed to people attending the 3-day UIC ERTMS World Conference in Málaga. Further copies, signed by Prof. Peter Winter, have been distributed at the UIC Stand.

After a first edition release in Bern in 2007, UIC published this second survey “Atlas of ERTMS Worldwide implementation” for the UIC ERTMS World Conference 2009.

The survey presents a picture of the current situation as of December 2008 of the installed ERTMS components: ETCS (the standardised control command system) and GSM-R (the standardised railway digital communication system) in respect of the implementation programmes in many countries in Europe and worldwide). It covers about 30,000 km of lines divided into 600 relevant sections. 25 European countries and 9 worldwide countries have been surveyed.

As ERTMS involves the installation of equipment on infrastructure and rolling stock, the survey has been developed around these two classes of assets.

The information on ERTMS implementation has been collected in UIC, as a part of the ERTMS Platform activity and stored at UIC Infrastructure Department in a comprehensive database per line sections and per country and completed by data from UNIFE. The final cross check of the respective data bases has led to this survey.

The development of a specific set of railway telecommunications functions and applications for the digital age has been the founding principle for UIC’s involvement in the GSM-R project from its very inception. The “GSM-R procurement & Implementation Guide” represent the distillation of extensive experience which has been built up by UIC and its Members through their intention with the supply industry and their partners, in tendering process for GSM-R and in the actual performance of commercial projects in the field.

The “GSM-R International interconnection / Common Design Document” establishes a guideline for the design and realization of the international GSM-R interconnection network.
It offers the readers the benefit of this rich experience and to allow them to gain an appreciation of the issues they will need to take account of in setting out to procure GSM-R projects.

Furthermore two newsletters have been published for this occasion the “UIC Focus of the ERTMS Platform” and the UIC Focus on GSM-R.
