Project Group Security of Stations: first results of a specific survey

The aim of this project group is to analyse effective solutions for station security measures and their impact on station business elements and customer perception and to prepare a “security of stations handbook” to be presented during the NextStation conference planned on 19 and 20 October in Madrid. Further information about the conference is available at http://www.nextstation2017.com/.

Within this framework and in addition to the expert workshops (we have informed you regularly via UIC eNews), the project group launched a dedicated online survey which has been carried out to examine different practices in the field of security provision and security tools’ influence on different areas of station management.

First of all, we would like to thank everybody for contributing to this survey.

Experts from 15 companies, coming from Europe as well as Asia, participated in the survey and shared their experience. One result is, that human factor input into security assurance still seems to be a leading one, forming up to 40% of information transfer. That means that even if measures or tools used for security assurance are technical, they are subject to the quality of staff work. This leads to the idea that station security is currently defined by the role of employees by more than 50%. This is just one aspect of the results, which were presented on 27 July 2017. In total, the experts evaluated the impact of 32 different security measures on station business areas and they were also asked questions about aspects of general security strategies.

The complete results of this survey and the expert workshops will be presented during the NextStation Conference.

The next meeting with security and station manager experts will take place on the following date:

  • 5 September 2017 in Paris, France – Content of the handbook
