The African Forum for Road Safety is supported by the Laser International Foundation and is a key event for the future of road safety on the continent.
Following on from the 2017 Global Road Safety Film Festival - co-organised with the United Nations at the Palais des Nations in Geneva - the Laser International Foundation organised the African Road Safety Film Festival.

The organisers of the festival received 85 video entries from around the world, of which 43 were selected and broadcast to festival participants.

The 2016 ILCAD video, “Do not overestimate your abilities near railway tracks” (https://youtu.be/7ibTYJQGusQ or https://youtu.be/w_gwagAqCi0) was amongst 23 films nominated. The video was co-produced by UIC and LdZ with TBWA (Latvia).

The video aims to raise awareness of the physical abilities of elderly people, who tend to overestimate their own physical capacity near railways. According to the research conducted by the agency involved in making the video, older people tend to believe that they have enough experience to deal with the challenges of safety near level crossings.

The creative concept for the video aimed:

  • to raise awareness of elderly people’s beliefs about their own physical abilities,
  • to challenge conventional wisdom in a humorous way,
  • to raise older people’s awareness of railway safety issues.
